On May 22, 2002 a group of music publishers consisting of Daniel Lafrance, Guillaume Lombart, Sébastien Nasra, Christopher Reed, Carol Ryan and Jehan Valiquet, with Serge Provençal acting as legal adviser, created the Professional Music Publishers Association, or PMPA.
The creation of this association was a first in Quebec and French Canada. Its main goals are to bring together music publishing professionals, to study, develop and defend their interests and further the national and international recognition of their profession.
PMPA is active in various issues including the revision and implementation of the Canadian Copyright Act, the collective management of rights and certification of tariffs and the creation of financial aid programs for music publishing firms. It is also involved in providing basic and continued training for publishers, as well as in improving the conditions in which the professional activity of its members is carried out. Finally, PMPA, by its implication in the International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP), is active in ensuring a satisfactory level of protection for musical works at the international level.
PMPA has three categories of members:
Active Member: Any person or company actively and professionally exercising the music publishing trade.
Associate Member: Any person or company who has an interest in music publishing.
Honorary Member: Any person or company appointed by the Board of Directors who, by his or her involvement and devotion, has significantly contributed to the progression of the music publishing trade.
